The Interdisciplinary Program in Women, Gender, and Sexuality (WGS) at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications for a Lecturer and Associate Director of WGS, beginning August 1, 2023. This is a career-track (NTT) position with a teaching load of three courses per semester (spring and fall) with administrative responsibilities for the entire year, including the summer months. Additional teaching in the summer may be available (for additional pay). Administrative responsibilities will include some combination of the following based on the candidate's interests and experience: advising, student-focused programming, and communications/social media. Primary teaching responsibilities will include WGS200: Introduction to Women, Gender, and Sexuality, as well as courses in the candidate's area(s) of expertise. We are particularly interested in candidates who can deepen and expand course offerings in LGBTQ+ studies and sexualities, as well as intersectionality and transgender issues. The position will be renewable yearly, contingent upon evidence of excellent teaching and performance of programmatic duties, though the initial appointment will be for one year.
The WGS Program at UT is a thriving interdisciplinary unit currently led by an multidisciplinary core faculty of nine scholars with expertise in various disciplines, methods, and approaches to women, gender, sexuality, race, and intersecting dimensions of difference and inequality. Launched in 2016, the WGS Program has grown to one of the largest interdisciplinary programs in the College of Arts and Sciences with over 40 undergraduate students enrolled in the major and minor, and at least 10 graduate students annually who pursue the Graduate Certificate in WGS. This position will be the first dedicated faculty line in WGS and represents the culmination of the program's tremendous growth and the College's support of the academic study of gender and sexuality.
A Ph.D. in women, gender, and sexuality studies or any related field (e.g. sociology, anthropology, history, literature, American studies, philosophy, geography, etc.) with sufficient concentration in WGS theory and methods is required at the time of appointment. Applicants must demonstrate excellent teaching and the potential for successful academic administration and advising, as well as scholarly expertise that will strengthen the unit's course offerings. A focus on LGBTQ+ issues and/or sexuality studies is preferred.
