Responsible for management and setup of equipment for introductory physics labs in Mechanics (PHY 12), Electricity, Magnetism and Optics (PHY 22), Astronomy (ASTR 08) and Advanced Labs (PHY 220 and 221). Coordinate with lab manager, instruct graduate-student TA’s who teach undergraduate labs, assist with faculty-research projects to design, purchase, and maintain instrumentation and equipment and maintain an electronics stockroom. 1. Undergraduate lab technician
*Plan and execute physics lab program in collaboration with Laboratory Manager
*Independently set-up and dismantle physics lab experiments for PHY 12 and 22 lab courses
(serving approximately 500 students per semester); assist with Astr 08, PHY 220 and PHY 221
*Test each set-up to make sure it functions properly on a weekly basis
*Maintain lab experiments in good condition
*Diagnose problems associated with lab experiments
*Order the part needed to repair equipment if part is not in our electronics stockroom
*Install equipment back into experiment
2. Instruct teaching assistants (TAs) and help to ensure safety in undergraduate laboratories
*Instruct all TAs on the performance of undergraduate lab experiments
*Solve problems that occur with teaching lab equipment and computers while labs are in session
*Instruct teaching assistants on the safe operation of teaching laboratory equipment
*Monitor teaching-laboratory operation for functionality of equipment and safety
3. Purchase, design and modify experiments in undergraduate teaching labs
*Design, build and test experiments
*Purchase new teaching-laboratory equipment
*Continuously upgrade experiments in the undergraduate labs
4. Inventory control of electronic equipment and parts stockroom
*Maintain stock of approximately 5000 electronic parts
*Purchase equipment required for all undergraduate labs
*Negotiate with vendors to ensure competitive prices
*Help design and build circuits for faculty research labs
5. Building and student-office maintenance
*Help organize and maintain office space for graduate-student TA’s and RA’s in physics
*Notify and consult with Lehigh facilities staff on electrical, lighting, plumbing, recycling
(computers, batteries, and chemicals), audio, visual, safety and heating air-conditioning issues
*Help upgrade use of lab and office spaces to suit department needs
6. Computer technology in the laboratory
*Interact with Library and Technology Services (LTS) to research, purchase and install
computers and software used in teaching labs and department offices
*Research, purchase and install computer interfaces for lab experiments, computer peripherals
(modems, lab hubs, A/D converters, printers, and scanners …)
*Interact with LTS to provide computer networking for undergraduate labs
*Maintain computers and peripherals in good repair
*Be aware of modern uses of computers in undergraduate lab settings

Special Considerations
The duties of the position do not allow for a remote work option; the employee in this position will be required to work on campus where they can be fully accessible to the Lehigh community.
Regular shift of 8:15 to 4:45 with a change of starting times to accommodate laboratory setup requirements; variable shifts/schedule
This position has contact with minors
Will often need to stand, use hands to touch, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, work near moving mechanical parts, be subject to electrical hazards and lift up to 25 pounds
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Electronic Technology, Computer Technology or Computer Networks or equivalent combination of education and experience: Master’s Degree in Physics, Chemistry or Electrical Engineering preferred
Three to five years related work experience
Experience with electronic repair, computer systems repair and installation preferred
Supervisory experience preferred
Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, time management and sound judgment
Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and a high degree of initiative for bringing tasks to completion
Solid analytical, decision making and problem-solving skills
Excellent computer skills with experience using word processing, spreadsheet and database software
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, national criminal background checks, motor vehicle checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance and credit history based upon the requirements of the position
