The Social Studies department offers a broad and challenging program; a sequential group of courses builds a body of knowledge, fosters critical thinking, and develops skills in research, writing, and oral expression. The High School Social Studies Teacher should be able to teach World Civilizations I (grade 9), World Civilizations II (grade 10), and United States History up to and including AP level (grade 11).Students at ASL study a number of AP courses, including Human Geography, Psychology, European History, Art History, and Economics. The department also sponsors and coaches students outside the classroom, including debate and public speaking, Model United Nations, and other related activities.
Summary of Major Responsibilities
Teach five sections of Social Studies in either grade 9, 10, 11, or 12 as assigned
Prepare, coordinate, and plan curriculum with other members of the department, and liaise with other departments as appropriate
Monitor and evaluate students’ progress, prepare for parent conferences, and complete report cards, among other tasks.
Exhibit knowledge of current trends in student-centered pedagogy, educational research, and topics of importance in social studies education by applying these in the classroom and sharing them with teachers on a departmental and school-wide basis. This includes curriculum development that emphasizes student voice and inquiry.
Organize and participate in field trips
Participate in regular, purposeful pedagogy meetings and in professional development sessions
Provide continuity of the students’ educational experience to allow a smooth transition from/to the US education system
Participate actively in the life of the School, through attendance at events, committee membership, and leadership of extracurricular activities
Any other duties as are within the scope, spirit, and purpose of the job as requested by the High School Principal
Essential qualifications/experience
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
Experience in a school with a similar teaching philosophy to that of ASL, which employs comparable teaching methods and curricula, or training that will adequately prepare the candidate for the American-style teaching methods employed by the School
Training and experience in cultural competency initiatives to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom, department, and workplace
Evidence of significant recent professional development
Excellent technology skills and experience integrating technology into the curriculum
Experience with standards-based learning
Willingness to contribute to school life outside of the classroom
A proven commitment to the safeguarding and welfare of children and young people
