We are consistently ranked as one of The Chronicle of Higher Education’s “Great Colleges to Work For,” and are proud to offer excellent benefits to compliment a dynamic and collaborative work environment where everyone can develop new skills and reach their highest potential. By joining USC as an employee, you will be a part of the Trojan Family – a lifelong and worldwide network of other staff, faculty, students, and over 400,000 living alumni all around the world who support one another and change the world each and every day.
Responsibilities of the Position
The Director of Residential Education reports to the Associate Vice Provost for Student Development and Engagement and is a key leader within USC Student Life and the University. The Director is responsible for the vision for a department that supports 8,000 residents, 202 Resident Assistants, 17 Faculty in Residence, 11 Graduate Student Staff, and a talented team of 30 professional staff. They directly supervise 2 Associate Directors and 1 Business Operations Manager.
Residential Education is a department that has seen a great deal of growth in a short amount of time, including the addition of eight new Residential Colleges in Fall 2017 to coincide with the opening of the USC Village. The department also redesigned the residential experience to strengthen programmatic and support services to meet students’ specific needs based on class level.
The entirety of the residential experience is driven by an engagement model throughout 14 Residential Colleges, two undergraduate apartment communities, and graduate and family housing (comprised of 27 distinct buildings in the North University Park Campus). The residential education staff provide a broad range of student development functions to create safe, supportive, and inclusive communities that foster students’ academic success, personal growth, leadership development, and social responsibility. This position is integral in implementing the first-year experience within the Residential College model for USC Student Life.
The Director is responsible for strategic planning, administrative management of the department, and programmatic oversight for efforts such as academic success, student leadership, community development, crisis intervention, critical incident response, student conduct, and establishing standards and best practice guidelines for the unit. A strong understanding of, and commitment to, diversity, equity, and social justice is essential. The student residential experience is fully funded by an endowment. That, combined with the operational budget, provides an annual budget oversight and responsibility for $14M.
The position works collaboratively with the 17 Faculty in Residence to add intellectual rigor to the residential experience and maintains positive relationships with campus partners, including USC Housing (USC is bifurcated system), Hospitality, Admissions, USC Orientation, Facilities and Maintenance, Crisis Support and Intervention, The Office of Equity, Equal Opportunity and Title IX, and the Department of Public Safety. Additionally, this position has the responsibility of maintaining strong collaborative relationships with other Student Life departments as they work in concert to create and implement the overall student experience at USC.
This is an exciting time to join USC with many opportunities to create a meaningful impact. A new President and several new Senior Leaders joined the University in summer 2019, our new Vice President for Student Life was named in March 2023, Student Life is launching our strategic compass in Spring 2023, and we are working with several other areas including enrollment services and academic programs to define student success at USC.
