Position Summary
The Department of Political Science seeks a talented instructor and capable organizer to serve as a full-time Program Coordinator position in support of the InnovateGov Summer Program in Detroit operated by the Department of Political Science.
The main responsibility of the Program Coordinator is to recruit, teach, and support summer program students and serve Program Directors and the Department in its operation of the InnovateGov Summer program in Detroit. Additional responsibilities during the academic year will include teaching related courses or sessions in the Department to expose students to program curriculum and assisting Directors in securing resources and funds for its operation. This position will work closely with the Directors of InnovateGov to ensure that the program goals and objectives are being met. Applicants must have a deep understanding of urban politics and policy, especially as it relates to cities in Michigan and Detroit.
This Academic Specialist-Teacher position is a one-year, full-time, benefits eligible appointment, renewable annually based on performance and availability of funding. Evaluation and oversight of this position will be conducted by the Chair of the Department with input from Directors of the InnovateGov program.
The InnovateGov experiential learning summer program in Detroit runs for approximately two months across May to July and serves undergraduate and MPP students. By partnering with the City of Detroit, Detroit Public Schools Community District, and dozens of community-based groups, InnovateGov students explore the roots of segregation and inequality in the urban setting and intern with organizations doing impactful work to increase equity and inclusion in the city. The successful applicant will have a demonstrated ability to teach courses related to urban politics, public policy, and the politics of Detroit, as well as the ability to work well with diverse individuals and groups; organize events; take on multiple tasks in a dynamic environment completing them efficiently and accurately, both independently and as a team member.

Required Degree
Masters -Political Science, Public Policy, or a related field
Minimum Requirements
- Masters of Arts (or equivalent) in Political Science, Public Policy, or a related field.
- Two or more years of academic or work experience in public policy or urban politics.
Desired Qualifications
- Teaching or instruction experience in related field;
- experience working with or overseeing students;
- program/project administration, event planning, project management, or other relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must possess valid driver’s license, car, and the ability to travel to both East Lansing and Detroit.
- Computer proficiency: Successfully uses multiple software programs independently. Software may include Excel, Outlook, Word, Office. Social Media expertise: Demonstrated expertise across social media and print communication for multiple audiences.
- Community competencies: familiarity with government, policy, or community-based organizations in Detroit. Demonstrate ability to work effectively with individuals and groups across age, race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities and other differences.
