Reporting to the Lower School Head, The Calverton School in Huntingtown, Maryland is seeking a full-time Lower School Music Teacher for the 2026-27 school year. We are seeking a passionate and dedicated music teacher to join our dynamic educational team. The music teacher will play a crucial role in music instruction, student engagement, and performance preparation of events. The candidate will work collaboratively with administration, teachers, parents, and other support staff to implement effective instruction that promotes a positive and inclusive learning environment that aligns with Calverton’s mission, values, and strategic vision.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Teach music concepts?to students in grades PreK-5, following the Calverton curriculum
Classroom instrumental instruction including unpitched percussion, Orff ensemble, recorder, ukulele, guitar, and keyboard.
Conduct music classes?following a curriculum that develops musical skills and appreciation for diverse musical genres and cultures while engaging all students
Direct school performances?including concerts, assemblies, and special events throughout the school year
Manage classroom behavior?and create a positive, inclusive learning environment where all students feel welcome to participate
Assess student progress?through observation, participation, and performance-based assessments; maintain accurate records and communicate with families about student growth
Collaborate with other special area teachers and classroom teachers?to integrate music into core curriculum and support school-wide initiatives and events
Maintain instruments and equipment, ensuring proper care, storage, and safety of all musical materials and technology
Strong musical ability with proficiency in at least one instrument; keyboard and guitar skills strongly preferred
Knowledge of music pedagogy and child development across elementary grades
Excellent communication skills for working with students, families, staff, and community members
Organizational and time-management skills to juggle multiple classes, rehearsals, and performances
Creativity and flexibility to adapt instruction and engage diverse learners and design new and exciting performances
Possess experience and a passion for working with lower school students and find joy in supporting their overall academic, social, emotional, and ethical development
Create a caring classroom community through thoughtful relationships with each student and family
Provide engaging, diverse, and student-centered learning experiences and have solid pedagogical practice to drive joyful and hands-on learning focused on skill, inquiry, and confidence-building
Promote principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in both curriculum and classroom culture
Engage actively in professional development – individual and school-wide – and bring a growth mindset to furthering knowledge of best educational practices
Attend all divisional, departmental, and school faculty meetings including professional development days
Participate broadly in the life of the school by attending events, chaperoning, supervising, advising, coaching, and sponsoring clubs
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Music Education or similar field
Minimum of 2-4 years teaching experience.
Experience with Kodaly, Orff, and Dalcroze is preferred
Knowledge of multi-sensory teaching methodologies.
Strong organization and time-management skills
Enthusiasm for working with lower school students
Educational philosophy that aligns with the mission, values, and vision of Calverton
Proficient user of technology
Collaborative and effective communication in working with students, teachers, administrators, and families
An ability to contribute positively to a student-centered learning environment
Must pass Federal and State background check along with MSDE Employment History Review
