The Chapin School’s Scholars-in-Residence Program offers innovative, inspired pre- and post-doctoral scholars or independent researchers an exciting opportunity—a structured two-year residency rooted in Chapin’s commitment to an inclusive and collaborative model of teaching and learning. For academics keen to contribute their expertise to and learn from colleagues at a leading K–12 independent school, Chapin’s Scholars-in-Residence Program serves as a mutually beneficial and intellectually sustaining incubator for curriculum development, pedagogical growth, research endeavors, and professional partnership within a joyful learning environment.
Scholars in Residence will have the opportunity to

Partner with one another as a team of scholars in developing curriculum and scholarly presentations alongside members of the Chapin community.
Conduct research and write research-based reports that support Chapin’s programmatic and curricular initiatives.
Develop and pursue a research project that meaningfully contributes to Chapin’s efforts to cultivate a community of belonging.
Engage in professional development alongside Chapin faculty to expand their classroom teaching skills and understanding of the developmental needs of young people.
Observe Chapin students, teachers, programs, and traditions to gain a deep sense of the life of independent schools.
Mentor Upper School students through independent research projects, study groups, or internships that support their fields of study.
Present their scholarship, through lectures and other means, to members of the Chapin community, including students, members of the professional community, alums, and parents.
Pursue their own research using Chapin’s resources within a vibrant, diverse, intellectually engaged professional community committed to collaboration and lifelong learning.
We are particularly interested in seeking Scholars with academic expertise in any of the following disciplines, in any combination: arts, history, humanities, literature, social science, area studies, ethnic studies, gender studies, nation studies, studies of diasporic cultures and communities, including but not limited to the African, Asian, or Hispanic/Latino/a/Latinx/e diaspora; scholars of Indigenous cultures; scholars of historical and contemporary social, political, and cultural movements; and scholars in STEM fields.
All Scholars may have the opportunity to collaborate with the faculty who teach Chapin’s 11th-grade interdisciplinary course, American Experience, a team-taught course in literature, history, and the arts. As well, we often invite Scholars to participate as guest instructors in our Berendsen Program of individualized study for Seniors.
Scholars in Residence for 2026–28 will report jointly to Chapin's Director of Academic Program and Chapin’s Senior Scholar in Residence. They will be expected to participate in activities and classes that require them to be on campus a minimum of eight hours per week. Scholars will enjoy a dedicated workspace at Chapin, as well as access to Chapin’s facilities, including the Annenberg Center for Learning and Research. Each Scholar will receive a $25,000 stipend for each year of their two-year program, dedicated workspace, a laptop computer for use during the two years, and a Chapin email address.

ABOUT US
The Chapin School, founded in 1901, is an independent, all-girls day school in New York City currently serving 802 students K–12.
Chapin’s signature Focus Forward strategic plan, which guided our work for more than a decade, intensified Chapin’s historic commitment to offering the most challenging academic curriculum while also teaching the social, emotional and other skills that will set the stage for its students’ success in this century. Chapin’s institutional priorities continue to be imbued with the spirit of Focus Forward. We have fine-tuned our... articulation of the School’s purpose as we approach the third decade of the 21st century. A forward-focused learning community whose symbol is a wheel will never cease to strive toward achieving its vision of cultivating in girls the skills and attributes that will allow them to be brave for themselves and for others.
UNDER ONE ROOF
Chapin’s single building provides a unified learning environment under one roof for all students, the 128 faculty members who teach them and the 85 staff members who support all other aspects of school life. An ambitious construction project to be completed in 2020 will feature an entire floor dedicated to the arts and a gymnasium with suspended running track—all with spectacular views of our urban location. The Hayot Center for Innovation, to open in 2020, will provide our entire learning community the opportunity to extend our commitment to interdisciplinary inquiry-based investigations and explorations, deepening students’ interests through experimentation, invention and the development of out-of-the-box solutions to complex issues.
Our vibrant, inspiring and welcoming new spaces will further our commitment to a forward- focused learning environment that enables all students to embrace the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century to the best of their abilities. With these exciting new spaces as a canvas, we renew our pledge to develop curriculum and pedagogy that reflect current research and best practices, always placing each student at the center of her own learning.
