The Buckley School in the City of New York, an all-boys K-8 + Academy Year day school, located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, is seeking an outstanding math and history teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. This position entails teaching one section of 5th-grade math, one section of 6th-grade advanced math, and one section of 5th-grade history.
The Buckley School’s math and history programs stand out for their depth, pace, rigor, and excellent preparation for success in secondary school. The 5th and 6th-grade math curriculum covers a range of topics, including arithmetic operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, measurement, volume, and area, along with an introduction to variables and algebraic expressions and equations. There is a strong emphasis on building mathematical problem-solving and communication skills, and all students participate in Math Olympiad competitions. The 5th-grade history curriculum studies both medieval Europe and world religions, specifically the Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity.
Faculty at Buckley take part in the whole life of the school. Hosting student clubs, serving as advisors, and having family-style lunch with students are all hallmarks of the program and part of the faculty experience. The preferred candidate will also be interested in and qualified to be a homeroom teacher in the Upper School. The homeroom teacher position entails oversight of morning meetings, daily recess, lunch coverage, study hall, and a class play. The homeroom role requires building proactive relationships with families, including conferences in the fall and as needed throughout the year.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate will have at least 3-5 years of math and/or history teaching experience. Demonstrably in-depth knowledge of content and pedagogy is paramount. Candidates with teaching experience in only math or history are encouraged to apply and should demonstrate enthusiasm and capacity for learning to teach whichever subject is less familiar.
Excellent writing, academic technology, and communication skills are vital. The successful candidate will recognize the unique opportunities afforded by an all-boys educational context, in addition to having a demonstrated passion for this age range. They will collaborate closely with colleagues within and across grade levels; collegiality and adaptability are essential qualities.
