The Miquon School, a Progressive, non-sectarian independent school serving grades Nursery through 6, is seeking a Learning Specialist to work with our students in the 2026-27 school year. The salary will be commensurate with experience and the position reports to the Associate Head of School for Teaching and Learning.
The Learning Specialist works with the Child Guidance Team and teachers to support the intellectual and social/emotional development of children as individuals and members of a community, with a focus on designing and differentiating curricula for children requiring additional help in math and literacy. This person will be a key member of the school’s Child Guidance Team. This role is a 10-month position.
Responsibilities May Include:
Supporting students with academic needs primarily in the area of literacy and math by designing and implementing one-on-one and small group sessions, and push-in support as appropriate
Collaborating with CGT and teachers to develop student learning plans, accommodations, and differentiated instruction and curriculum
Screening children for learning and developmental differences or interpret outside assessments
Collaborating and partnering with teachers to communicate student needs and progress; recommend outside testing, tutoring, or other indicated special services
Overseeing the school’s learning support program, including tracking student progress, and collaborating with teachers and families to keep them updated.
Attending staff meetings, grade level team teacher meetings, and family meetings to discuss individual student progress and coaching for professional development in working with students with learning differences
Managing and organizing all materials required for the program
Incorporating social-emotional learning and diversity, equity, and inclusion into working with students
Participating in school-wide duties as assigned
Ensuring students are joyfully and safely engaged in classroom activities and outdoor play
Engaging in professional development as needed
Requirements
Experience working with elementary-age children in a related role or work
Experience with a variety of academic interventions
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Able to supervise students effectively and interact collaboratively with parents, teachers, and school administrators
Preferred: an individual with experience in special or general education (including former lead teachers interested in an ed specialist role), or a current graduate student seeking an advanced degree in general and/or special education, with demonstrated experience supporting students with learning differences
About Miquon
Founded in 1932 in a tradition of Progressive education that is strongly upheld today, Miquon is an independent, coeducational elementary school just outside of Philadelphia for children in Nursery (age 3) through the 6th grade. The school enrolls approximately 150 students in nine mixed-age groups, typically 18-22 children in size. Each classroom has two teachers who are responsible for providing instruction for their group together.
